Second Week in Texas

My second week in Texas was a very full and busy week.

Monday we had a full day of classes starting our Basic Firefighting training. Mostly lectures with a little bit of practical in the afternoon getting our equipment sorted before our big day of practical exercises on Tuesday.

Tuesday started bright and early on the fire field at 6am where we participated in a variety of exercises that tested what we had learnt the day before. It was fun, a little exciting and a little scary all at the same time.

Wednesday was another day full of lectures. Thanks to one of the girls who has a car here, we got to head off campus and out to a local town to go to Target which was a fun excursion.

Thursday started with some more lectures and ended at a local YMCA pool where we participated in some water survival activities including diving into the pool in an immersion suit and life jackets, as well as using a life raft.

Friday was our last day of Basic Training and we finished the week with First Aid and CPR. It was interesting noting some of the small differences from Australia to the US.

The weekend has been a relaxing time as a lot more people arrive before the next phase of training begins on Monday. Saturday night we went to a local rodeo and had a lot of fun watching the events.

This next week begins ‘Gateway’ which is Mercy Ships training that focusses more on who Mercy Ships is and preparing us for living on the ships in close community with hundreds of other people.

Enjoy some of the photos from the past week.
