I’m sure you didn’t expect to see another post on this blog, but here I am back with another post. When you clicked the link, you may have noticed that the blog is no longer called Teacher On A Ship, instead it is now Girl On Board.
That’s right. I’m no longer a teacher on the ship, but I am going back on board.
Surprise! I will be leaving Brisbane, and heading back to Africa. This time with a few changes. I am joining the Global Mercy (GLM) in Ghana as the Head Receptionist in September.
For most of 2026, I have felt God calling me back into full time ministry, particularly with a missions focus. So after many (MANY!!!) conversations with Mercy Ships, I was accepted and asked if I could come earlier than planned.
The role of Head Receptionist, is not just answering phones and responding to questions like you may think. Instead there is so much more involved. Of course, there will be times where I need to answer the phones, fax, or email and of course I will be available to answer questions. However, I am also responsible for checking passports, signing crew onto the ship, monitoring the fire panel and CCTV in order to respond in emergency situations, and much more. As Head Receptionist I will be responsible for the other receptionists helping organise the roster, train new staff and look after the wellbeing of my team.
This is something I am very excited about, especially the opportunity to go to a different ship and a new country. The GLM is a much bigger and new ship and I’m excited to explore all of its features, including the gym, walking track, library, chapel and more. I’m also excited to go to Ghana and explore Accra and the surrounds. (Check out this link to do a virtual walkthrough of the GLM)
I will be leaving Australia towards the end of September so there is not a lot of time between now and then. I have a lot to organise and will also be fundraising.
